Shower Safe

Project Description

This was an intensive week long project in our basic interaction design class. We had to choose a control or a physical system from our daily lives and redesign it.

Process

I searched for objects that I have trouble interacting with and chose the one which I liked the least. I chose the feature I wanted to redesign. My design underwent a number of iterations before I had a product that satisfied my needs.

Design

Shower Safe is a shower knob that lets the user receive feedback about the kind of water settings he has for his bath. There are pores on the knob from which water comes out when the user pushes the knob in order to start the shower. This water gives the user a sample of the water which he would shower in. The knob is deliberately a push knob, as that would minimize the chances of the user getting burnt as he would immediately withdraw his hand if the sample water was too hot, thereby, stopping the shower. Once the knob is completely pushed it will lock and start the actual shower. It is possible to adjust the temperature by rotating the knob at any time during the shower.
